Bridging the trust gap between your employees and AI

Bridging the trust gap between your employees and AI

You’ve probably been considering how to harness the potential of AI to boost your company’s efficiency and productivity.

But there’s a small problem. A recent study revealed something fascinating but not entirely surprising: A trust gap when it comes to AI in the workplace.

While you see AI as a fantastic opportunity for business transformation, your employees might be sceptical and even worried about their job security.

Here’s a snapshot of the findings:

  • 62% of C-suite executives welcome AI, but only 52% of employees share the same enthusiasm.
  • 23% of employees doubt their company’s commitment to employee interests when implementing AI.
  • However, 70% of business leaders believe that AI should include human review and intervention, showing they view AI as an assistant rather than a replacement.

Now that we understand the situation, how can you introduce AI gently and reassure your employees that their roles are safe?

Start by having open and honest conversations with your employees. Explain why you’re introducing AI and how it will benefit both the company and individual roles. Show them that AI is meant to be a helping hand, not a jobs terminator.

Invest in training that helps your people acquire the skills they need to work alongside AI. Make them feel empowered by showing that it can make their jobs more interesting and valuable.

Emphasise that your AI initiatives are designed to enhance human capabilities, not replace them. Let your team know that it will handle repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus on more creative and strategic aspects of their work.

Develop clear guidelines for responsible AI use in your business. Highlight your commitment to ethical practices and ensure that employees are aware of these policies.

Involve your employees in the implementation process. Seek their input, listen to their concerns, and make them part of the solution. This shows that you value their contributions.

Encourage a culture of continuous learning. Let your employees know that they’ll have opportunities for ongoing education and development, ensuring they stay relevant and valuable in the AI-driven workplace.

Introducing AI into your workplace doesn’t have to be a cause for concern among your employees. AI is a tool for growth and innovation, not a threat to job security.

If we can help you introduce the right AI tools in the right way, get in touch.

Don’t think your business is a target? Think again

Don’t think your business is a target? Think again

Don’t think your business is a target? Think again

You might assume that cybercriminals only have eyes for big corporations or those with hefty bank accounts. But the truth may surprise you.

Recent studies reveal that cybercriminals are broadening their scope, targeting businesses of all sizes, from local shops to multinational corporations. And they’re employing a powerful tool called “botnets” to do it.

What exactly are botnets, and why should you be concerned? Botnets are the covert weapons of cybercrime, comprised of networks of compromised devices controlled by a single malicious entity. These devices can range from your computer to even your smart refrigerator. Yes, even appliances can be turned into cyber weapons.

A recent report documented significant spikes in botnet activity, with over a million devices engaged in malicious actions at one point. To put this into perspective, it’s a hundredfold increase from typical levels of activity.

Normally, around 10,000 devices engage in malicious activities daily, with the highest previously recorded number at 20,000. However, in December 2023, these numbers skyrocketed. The count surged to 35,144, and within two weeks, it soared to 43,194. That’s a concerning number of compromised devices.

But it didn’t stop there; researchers witnessed the largest spike yet, with a staggering 143,957 distinct devices being utilized simultaneously. In fact, on January 5th and 6th, there were spikes exceeding a million devices!

Why are cybercriminals resorting to such tactics? These botnets are deployed to scour the internet for vulnerabilities in websites, servers, and email systems.

Think of the internet as a fortress with numerous entry points. Cybercriminals search for unlocked doors and open windows to infiltrate. They target specific “ports” that serve as entryways.

How can you shield yourself from these digital threats?

It boils down to fortifying those entry points. Here are some straightforward measures:

  • Keep your software, operating systems, and applications updated regularly to patch vulnerabilities.
  • Employ robust firewall and antivirus software to safeguard your devices.
  • Educate your staff about cybersecurity best practices, including avoiding suspicious links and emails.
  • Implement strong, unique passwords for all accounts and devices.
  • Back up your data routinely to mitigate losses in the event of a cyberattack.
  • Monitor your network for any abnormal activities.
  • Consider enlisting the expertise of a cybersecurity professional (like us) to evaluate and enhance your security protocols.

This new search feature in Edge is a revolution

This new search feature in Edge is a revolution

Microsoft’s at it again, presenting us with new features week after week. This time it’s all about making our online searches smarter and more efficient in the Edge browser. If you’ve been on the fence about switching to it, this might just be the push you need.

Edge has a cool new feature, as revealed by Mikhail Parakhin, CEO of Advertising and Web Services at Microsoft. Imagine this: you’re searching for something important for your business – maybe it’s market research or the latest trends in your industry. You type in your query, and you get results from not one but two search engines at the same time.

How does it work?

Let’s break it down. Say Bing is your default search engine. Now, when you hit the search icon, you won’t just see Bing’s results, you’ll also get a peek at what Google (or your alternative search engine of choice) has to offer. This dual view works both ways, ensuring you’re not missing out on any valuable information.

In business, information is gold. Having access to comprehensive search results means you’re more likely to find the most relevant, diverse, and valuable information. No more switching between browsers or tabs to compare search results – Edge now does that for you in a single view.

Some people have raised concerns about potential visual clutter from combining two engines’ results. It’s a valid point, and thankfully, Microsoft is listening. Parakhin hinted at the possibility of customising your ‘backup’ search engine to streamline the experience. While the sidebar’s width is currently fixed, there’s an openness to explore deeper customisation options soon.

This feature in Edge is quite a lure. It simplifies the task of searching, making research quicker and more effective. You get the best of both worlds without the hassle of juggling multiple windows.

And it’s more than just a convenience; it’s a step towards smarter, more efficient browsing, especially for us in the business community. It demonstrates Microsoft’s commitment to improving user experience and staying competitive in the browser game.

For current Edge fans, this is an exciting upgrade. For everyone else, it’s a compelling reason to consider making the switch.

Here’s what’s in store for the last ever Windows ‘Moments’ update

Here’s what’s in store for the last ever Windows ‘Moments’ update

Microsoft is about to release its latest Windows 11 update, named “Moment 5” or the “February 24 Moment.” It’s expected in the next few weeks and brings some important changes.

After this update, Microsoft is going back to updating Windows 11 annually. This means more stability and fewer big changes to your system. Goodbye to those frequent “moment” updates and hello to a more predictable schedule.

Now, let’s see what Moment 5 has in store:

One key improvement is in Windows 11’s accessibility tools. Microsoft is making it better for those who rely on them. Voice Access is getting upgrades, supporting multiple monitors and more languages. “Voice shortcuts” for personalized voice commands are being introduced. Narrator can preview new natural voices and works with voice access for various tasks.

You can now write directly into text boxes with a stylus across the system, making it easier for digital pens. Also, for the first time, Microsoft lets you uninstall some in-box apps like Edge, Camera, and Photos.

The Windows Search pane is becoming more flexible, allowing third-party search providers like Google or Yahoo to create plugins. So, if you prefer a different search engine, you can switch.

The Nearby Share feature is improving with “friendly name” support, making file sharing easier. Windows Spotlight, showing Bing’s background of the day, becomes the default wallpaper setting. Copilot is now “undockable” for more flexibility, and you can find it in the Windows ALT+TAB menu.

Widgets Board is getting updates too. You can disable Microsoft News integration for a widget-only layout. Third-party news services can build plugins to integrate with the Widgets Board, giving more options.

Notepad gets a character count feature and an “Edit with Notepad” shortcut in context menus for some file types.

In short, Moment 5 brings many improvements to Windows 11, making it more user-friendly and versatile.

For business owners, these updates can boost productivity and simplify workflows. If you haven’t switched to Windows 11 yet, now is the right time! Get in touch with us.

Will Free Support Be Ending For Windows 10?

Will Free Support Be Ending For Windows 10?

Microsoft has announced that starting on 14th October 2025, they will no longer provide free support and security updates for Windows 10.

While the idea of paying for updates might raise some eyebrows, let’s put this into perspective. By 2025, Windows 10 will be a decade old, and Microsoft is likely to have introduced Windows 12. Moreover, as we know, Windows 11 is available today.

Supporting multiple old operating systems can be quite a handful, even for a tech giant like Microsoft. Consequently, 2025 may seem like a way off, but it’s a good idea to start weighing up your options now. Here they are:

Option 1: Upgrade to Windows 11

Microsoft’s preferred option is for you to switch to Windows 11. Notably, it’s got some fantastic features and free updates until its end of life.

Option 2: Stick with Windows 10 and pay

Alternatively, you can choose to stay with Windows 10, but you’ll need to pay for security updates (no new features, though). The exact cost isn’t known yet; it’ll likely be a subscription for monthly updates.

Option 3: Stick with Windows 10 and don’t update it

Sure, you can continue using Windows 10 without paying, but this isn’t advisable. Without updates, your business’s PCs will become vulnerable to threats and security issues. Furthermore, without Microsoft’s support to fix problems, even tech experts like us have nowhere to go for help. Please don’t take this option!

You’ve got until October 2025 to decide, so there’s no rush. Nevertheless, if you want your business to thrive this year, we’d highly recommend upgrading to Windows 11 sooner than later. You’ll immediately benefit from some features that could improve your processes and make your team’s jobs easier.

If you’re considering the move to Windows 11 or exploring other options, we’re here to help make the transition smooth and hassle-free. Get in touch.

Are you ready for next-gen email security? (YES!)

Are you ready for next-gen email security? (YES!)

Google just released a cool new tool for Gmail called RETVec. It’s all about making your inbox safer from spam.

So, what’s RETVec? In simple terms, it stands for Resilient and Efficient Text Vectorizer. Basically, it’s a tool that helps Gmail do a better job of finding and blocking annoying spam emails.

You know how sneaky spammers can be, right? They use tricks like invisible characters and weird spellings to avoid getting caught. But RETVec is like a superhero trained to handle all those tricks.

Think of it like this: RETVec turns words and phrases into numbers and uses those numbers to help Gmail figure out what’s spam and what’s not. It’s like giving Gmail a superpower to detect spam.

What’s in it for you? Well, with RETVec, Gmail’s spam detection got 38% better, and false alarms (legitimate emails marked as spam) dropped by almost 20%.

Now, here’s a heads up. Because RETVec is super vigilant, some legit emails might accidentally get marked as spam. So, keep an eye on your email stats to make sure your important messages get through.

RETVec isn’t just about security—it’s faster too. Google says it uses 83% less computing power, making things speedier and more efficient. That’s great news for big applications and devices.

Spam is like a tool for cybercriminals, and RETVec helps Gmail block those bad emails, keeping your data safe and your inbox clean.

If you don’t use Gmail, don’t worry. Other email providers, like Microsoft, might get similar tools soon.

Meanwhile, if you’d like a review of your business’s email security, feel free to get in touch.

Happy New Year.

Remember Microsoft Paint? The simple drawing tool that many of us used to create pixelated masterpieces in our youth? It’s probably not an app you use very much these days. But what if I told you there’s a reason you might want to revisit it right now?

Microsoft Paint is getting a serious upgrade in Windows 11 – and it’s all about AI.

The big news is the introduction of Dall-E 3 support to Paint, or as it’s known in the app, Cocreator.

Sound familiar?

If you’ve seen the feature in Bing AI, you know it’s a game-changer. This isn’t just any old image creation feature. With Cocreator, you can tell it what you want, specify an art style, and an image based on your description magically appears.

And this isn’t some gimmicky add-on. When Cocreator first rolled out with Bing Chat (now called Copilot), there was a massive rush to use the image generation capability. And the buzz around how good it is? Well, let’s just say it’s been substantial.

Sure, there have been a few hiccups along the way, but when it comes to AI, a bit of turbulence is par for the course.

Windows Latest reports that Cocreator in Paint has left the testing phase and is ready for prime time – it’s now rolling out to all Windows 11 users.

If you’re not seeing the Cocreator feature yet, don’t worry, it’s coming. Just make sure you’re running the latest version of Paint. If Microsoft asks you to sign up for the waiting list, do it.

The Cocreator feature isn’t the only new addition to Paint. The app has been significantly beefed up this year. We’re talking a transparency effect, layers (a much-requested functionality), and even background removal. And these improvements aren’t just for Paint, Microsoft’s core Windows 11 apps are also getting a makeover.

At this point, you might be thinking, “That’s all well and good, but how does this help my business?”

Well, imagine being able to create custom graphics for presentations, reports, or social media posts in seconds. Think about how much time and money that could save.

With Cocreator, anyone on your team can become a graphic designer. No need for expensive software or lengthy training; just describe what you want, and let AI do the rest.

Raring to try this one out (it’s a nice way to start the new year)? You’ll need to have Windows 11 installed. If we can help with that, or any other tech problem this year, get in touch.

What are you waiting for? Oh, right, the turkey…

You’re not imagining it, video calls ARE stressful

You’re not imagining it, video calls ARE stressful

You know that feeling when you’ve spent way too much time in virtual meetings, and you’d trade your favourite coffee mug for some real face-to-face interaction? That’s called Zoom fatigue.

It turns out there’s scientific evidence to back up what we’ve all been feeling.

Recently, researchers from Austrian universities decided to take a closer look at the impact of video conferencing on our bodies and minds. They strapped participants with EEG and ECG monitors and went to town with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and similar platforms.

The results were eye-opening.

Brain signal frequency, as measured by EEG, showed a noticeable increase in higher-level frequencies associated with concentration, attention, and stress during online meetings compared to in-person encounters. So, it’s not just your imagination – those video calls are really making you work extra hard to stay focused.

Additionally, the study revealed changes in heart rate variability, indicating ongoing signs of fatigue throughout the course of an online meeting.

Before you swear off video meetings forever, it’s essential to consider the study’s context. The participants were university students, not corporate warriors, and the study was conducted on-campus, not from cosy home offices. So, there might be some variations based on age and environment.

However, the key takeaway is that communicating face-to-face versus through a screen can have a significant impact on the human body. So, even if you’re not a 24-year-old student on a college campus, video conferencing fatigue is a real thing.

What can businesses do if they want to keep the benefits of video conferencing without driving their employees up the virtual wall?

Consider using collaboration tools like Teams, Slack, or even good old-fashioned email to reduce the need for real-time video meetings. Give your team the flexibility to respond when it suits them best.

If possible, schedule in-person meetings when it’s safe and practical to do so. Nothing beats the personal touch of a face-to-face conversation, and it’s a refreshing break from the virtual world.

The simplest solution can often be the most effective. Have an open conversation with your employees about their preferences for communication. Some may thrive in video meetings, while others may prefer written updates or phone calls.

When you do schedule video meetings, keep them short and sweet. Avoid back-to-back calls and allow time for breaks between meetings to prevent burnout.

The message is clear: don’t throw out your webcam just yet. Instead, take a step back, assess your communication methods, and find the right mix that keeps your team engaged and energised.

New! A better way to find Chrome extensions

New! A better way to find Chrome extensions

If you use Google Chrome, you’ll love this. Google has just rolled out a game-changing update that’s going to make your browser more powerful than ever.

It’s the revamped Chrome Web Store, featuring a fresh design and exciting new features.

Now, if you’re like me, you’ve probably spent more time than you’d care to admit sifting through the Chrome Web Store in search of the perfect extensions for your browser. Those days of endless scrolling and hunting for that elusive add-on are officially over.

First off, they’ve introduced new categories to help you quickly find what you need. Whether you’re shopping, looking for productivity tools, or are just in the mood for some entertainment, there’s a category for you. And the cherry on top? There’s now a dedicated section for AI-powered extensions.

These AI-powered extensions are not to be underestimated. Many of them integrate popular chatbots and even some of the best ChatGPT extensions available. Imagine having your own virtual assistant right in your browser, ready to answer questions, provide recommendations, and assist with various tasks.

And it doesn’t stop there. Google has also included a ‘suggested extensions’ section that tailors recommendations based on what you’ve previously downloaded.

There’s an ‘Editors’ spotlight’ section which promises to showcase up-and-coming extensions you might have otherwise missed.

Navigating the Chrome Web Store has become even more intuitive. The search bar has moved to the top-right corner of the screen, and Google has enhanced its capabilities. You can filter by all items or focus on featured extensions and themes, making it a breeze to find exactly what you want.

In the top-left corner, you’ll find the Extensions tab to dive deeper into add-ons for your browser. Fancy changing the look of Chrome? Simply navigate to the Themes tab. Customisation has never been this easy.

While this new Chrome Web Store update is undoubtedly exciting, let’s not forget about the importance of staying vigilant when it comes to browser security. Here are a few reminders:

1. Monitor downloads to make sure they’re safe and relevant

2. Never download extensions from third-party websites

3. Make sure everyone in your business is aware of and follows the correct security measures.

4. Regularly update Chrome and your extensions and educate your team about the importance of strong passwords and safe browsing practices.
